Papillon, Dogs breed of toy dog whose origins are obscure but whose widespread existence in Europe is attested to as early as the17th cent. It stands from 8 to 11 in. (20.3–27.9 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 5 to 11 lb (2.3–5 kg). Its long, straight, abundant coat is fine and silky and forms a fringe of longer hair on the ears, chest, back of legs, and tail. Believed to have developed from a now extinct dwarf Belgian spaniel, the papillon derives its name, which means "butterfly" in French, from the unique appearance of its obliquely set, wing-shaped ears. The papillon was very fashionable as a lapdog in the courts of Europe Today it is raised as a companion and house pet.

Weimaraner,dog breed of large, muscular
sporting dog developed in Germany in the early 19th cent. Itstands between 23 and 27 in. (58.4–68.6 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs between 55 and 85 lb (25–38.6 kg). Its short, smooth coat ranges in color from mouse-gray to silver-gray. The tail is docked to approximately 6 in. (15.2 cm). Although originally they hunted game such as wildcats, wolves, deer, mountain lions, and bears, the dwindling population of these animals in Germany led the Weimaraner to be bred increasingly for upland bird hunting. Today it is used as both bird dog and water retriever.

The Rottweiler is a "Mastiff type" dog and was kept by Rome's armies to manage their herds of cattle which traveled with them. The Rottweiler was also used to guard the supply stores at night while the soldiers slept. The breed was also developed further by butchers in southern Germany who used the dogs as rovers and sporting dogs for boar hunting. Declining in the 1850's through 1900, the Rottweiler gained popularity for use as a police dog, working, and guard dog in the TwentiethCentury. The Rottweiler is considered the strongest dog in the world for its size. It has a massive head, powerful jaws, and its powerful and compact body make it capableof great endurance. It is intelligent, dependable, rugged, with a will to work, and a strong guarding instinct

It wasn't until the latter portion of the 1500s and early 1600s  that China began trading with European countries such as   Portugal, Spain, Holland and England. Small dogs presented as a gifts returned from the Orient with the traders, and thus began
the rise of the Pug in popularity in Europe. The Chinese had often interbred among the three types of dogs they favored, and so many times breeders would find a long haired Pug among a litter of puppies, as well as white spots on the head.

The Basset Hound's placid and friendly temperament belies the fact that they are a true hound.  Happiest in a pack (humans will
do) they are not very obedient being wilful but never aggressive
.

Hairless mutations have occurred in pariah-type litters, and from these the modern hairless breeds have evolved, likely first
developing in Africa. Hairless dogs captivated the attention and fancy of ancient dog lovers in Africa, Mexico, Spain and China.
Fortunately for the breed, Chinese dogs accompanied thir masters on trade vessels throughout the world, leaving mementos of
their visits behind. True to the dominant genetics, hairlessness would show up in that first litter

Although the precise origin of the APBT is not known, we can reliably trace its roots back
at least one hundred and fifty years or so [1] to England. During the late 18th and early 19th
centuries the sport of bull-baiting was very much alive and dogs were bred to excel in this
endeavor. The same type of dog was also used by hunters to catch game and by butchers
and farmers to bring down unruly cattle. These dogs were called "bulldogs." Historically,
the word "Bulldog" did not mean a specific breed of dog per se, but rather it was applied
descendants of the ancient Mastiff- type dogs that excelled in the task of bull-baiting. The
"bulldogs" of yore were much different from, and should not be confused with, the
loveable clowns of the show ring today. The old, performance-bred, working bulldog was
closer in phenotype and spirit to the APBT and/or the modern American Bulldog. The use
of the word "bulldog" applied to APBT's persists even today among APBT fanciers
